On Why Safety Is Number One at Work

I was working at a machinery factory which produces large electric transformers sometime back as a fork lift driver. At that time there was no safety measures taken to ensure worker safety by the management. All we got were old pairs of gum boots to wear to work and an old set of uniforms - no proper ppe workwear.

One day there was an interview for an another fork lift driver as one fellow driver had retired. The new guy was a very young boy of about 18 years old. He was assigned to work on the very next day even without issuing a new helmet for him. He worked about 1 week before this fatal accident happened. It was a Friday and everyone was eager to finish their work quickly as possible to go home early. I was relieved from my driver job and assigned to carry a large box of tools across the factory. I was carrying that large box of tools when I heard a forklift speeding towards me. I couldn't see it because the box was too big for me and I remembered nothing until I wake up in a hospital bed. My leg and left arm was broken. What happened was that new guy drove a forklift which was loaded too much and couldn't control the vehicle. The doctors said if I was wearing my helmet at the time of the accident, my head damage wouldn't be so severe. It took months for me to recover from the injuries and even now I can't do heavy work.
