On Why Safety Is Number One at Work

posted on 5 January 2012

I was working at a machinery factory which produces large electric transformers sometime back as a fork lift driver. At that time there was no safety measures taken to ensure worker safety by the management. All we got were old pairs of gum boots to wear to work and an old set of uniforms - no proper ppe workwear. One day there was an interview for an another fork lift driver as one fellow driver had retired. The new guy was a very young boy of about 18 years old. He was assigned to work on the very next day even without issuing a new helmet for him. He worked about 1 week before this fatal accident happened. It was a Friday and everyone was eager to finish their work quickly as possible to go home early. I was relieved from my driver job and assigned to carry a large box of tools across the factory. I was carrying that large box of tools when I heard a forklift speeding towards me. I couldn't see it because the box was too big for me and I remembered nothing until I wake up in a hospital bed. My leg and left arm was broken. What happened was that new guy drove a forklift which was loaded too much and couldn't control the vehicle. The doctors said if I was wearing my helmet at the time of the accident, my head damage wouldn't be so severe. It took months for me to recover from the injuries and even now I can't do heavy work.

Change Your House, Change Your Life

I would like to remodel my house and the main changes I would make are: expand the main bedroom, build a balcony and place there many pots with flowers to feel a fresh sensation in the morning. Paint the house with bright colors full of life to give it energy. I'd use velcro tape instead of boring metal fasteners for things like curtains. Change completely the garden, and make it bigger, now it’s too small It’s an important place of your house, it’s the place you relax. I would like to build a garage to protect my car in the rainy season. Another important thing is repair the roof. Remodel the kitchen I do not like the current distribution - it's so very narrow. I would like to add lighting to the house as it's now very dark and gives a feeling of gloominess. I also would like to change the floor of the house as it now looks very old the house does not look very clean. These changes are a lot but if I carry them out one at a time, I'll get there in the end.

The Big Clean Up I Had to Get Done Immediately

Vigorous shakes from my son are what awoke me at 7:00am that morning. The night before had been filled with lots of drinking and dancing as we celebrated my 40th birthday. Memories of how I danced raced through my mind that I could realize where I was. It wasn’t until I tried to move out of where I lay that I realized I had spent the night on a couch in the kitchen. There was actually a cloud of disorganization covering my house. If my boss had arrived at that time I would have been fired...hmm!!! Without a second thought I told my son to avail various forms of soap, detergent, and brushes. Corner after corner we got the room thoroughly cleaned up. My son had worked recently for a tank cleaning service and he did make some joke about how this was a tougher job than any cleaning job he'd been paid to do in the past. My son collected up all forms of liter (broken bottles, plates, used up serviette)and threw them into the dust bin as I made sure the floor was thoroughly scrubbed and dried. After hour works of serious work, the room begun to shape and by 12:00pm it again looked like the room of a sales executive. I promised myself never to invite people into my living room for any sort of party.

I Can't Do Any More Physical Work With My Dodgy Shoulder

posted on 4 August 2011

I'm a carpet layer by trade, but I've also done many other jobs in the past - from using concrete screeds, driving a tractor, been a brick layer - all kinds of physical jobs. But since last September, I've done no work at all. I did my shoulder in - in a big way. I can't lift anything above my shoulder now, making my carpet fitting job an impossibility. Even lifting anything below my shoulder height is agony. My physician tells me that I'll need a big operation to put this right, and that even if the operation is successful, I may not be able to work like I used to. Since then I've looked in the papers for work but I'm really not up to office work - I do love my physical work! I'll just have to keep looking and hope inspiration takes hold and I find a job I want to do.
